Best-loved...

Israel loved Joseph best of all his sons, for he was the child of his old age; and he had made him a long tunic. When his brothers saw that their father loved him best of all his sons, they hated him so much that they would not even greet him. (Gn 37:3-4)
Whoa! I thought parents are not supposed to have a favorite child... Israel certainly did! There was something special about Joseph. In Genesis we read that he was "strikingly handsome in countenance and body", but I doubt it was these qualities that endeared him to his father. His special relationship with his father created discord between Joseph and his brothers- it was a source of jealousy and hatred that culminated in the brothers selling him for twenty pieces of silver. Despite the trials he endured away from the comforts of home and family, Joseph was able to thrive in Egypt. God was with him, and His providential care for Joseph enabled him to find favor with the rulers of Egypt. When he was finally reunited with his brothers, Joseph offered them forgiveness. His words reveal his understanding of God's plan and the part he had to play, "Have no fear. Can I take the place of God? Even though you meant harm to me, God meant it for good, to achieve his present end, the survival of many people." (Gn 50:19-20)
God's love has no partiality. Each of us is a best-loved child of God! There is no need to compare or become jealous of others. We are made in His image, and possess certain unique qualities that enable us to carry out the work of our Heavenly Father. We may have to endure trials and persecution, but God is with us, and He will allow us to thrive in the worst circumstances. There is much work to be done- may we do our part with the strength God gives, and pray that all will come to know the saving love of God.
