Like the Pharisees, we can appear religious on the outside, but our hearts may be far from God.
We can go through the motions, performing all the right external acts, fasting, reading extensively, and performing great acts of service. But, without love, we are just noise- "a resounding gong or a clashing cymbal."
This Lent, may we offer God our sacrifice of a contrite and humbled heart.
My sacrifice, O God, is a contrite spirit; a contrite, humbled heart, O God, you will not scorn. (Ps 51:19)
