I was a new driver when I arrived in this country in 1996. Those first few months were scary driving on the “wrong side” of the road. You see, I was accustomed to driving on the left side and had to continuously remind myself to “keep right!”
This week ushered in the season of Lent. Once again, we’re reminded to turn away from sin, to believe in the Gospel. In essence, we are given the opportunity to examine all the ways we are traveling on the wrong side of the road.
Sin keeps us from walking, talking, living right. We have become self indulgent, failing to pay attention to the needs of others, even neglecting to love and worship God as He truly deserves.
Through our Lenten observances of fasting, prayer and almsgiving, we are encouraged to get back on track, to keep right.
It is desert time! Time to face our temptations, to be honest about the ways we are squandering time, talents and treasure. Time to examine what is truly in our hearts… what is preventing us from claiming our identity and dignity as beloved children of God. He is waiting for us to call on His Name; watching for us to turn from the way of the world to the arms of the Father.
May our efforts to deny ourselves, take up our crosses and follow Christ draw us closer to His heart this Lent.
