There's a Pharisee in me
Who's pompous as can be-
Observes the rules, recites the laws
Wears righteous robes for all to see
He takes the place of honor
And speaks to his own ear;
Claims he's generous, honest, faithful
And boasts ‘bout paying his share
Yet, he lives aside a sinner-
That man dwells in me too,
He retreats when the Pharisee prays,
For he knows what he must do
So he bows his head and beats his breast,
Averts his eyes and softly cries:
Be merciful to me, O God;
Forgive my sins and all my lies
I have not loved You as I should,
I have not sought my brother's good
My sinful heart's in need of You:
Lord, wash me, cleanse me, make me new
“Two people went up to the temple area to pray; one was a Pharisee and the other was a tax collector.” Luke 18:10
