It's the season of Advent, the wonderful time of preparation, of awaiting the coming of our Lord Jesus at Christmas. Once again, we can get so caught up in the worldly anxieties of shopping, decorating and celebrating, that we overlook the spiritual preparation required during this season.
Yet, opportunities abound if we are willing to draw closer to Jesus, to seek Him with all our hearts, to allow Him to "wash away the filth" (Is 4:4) of sin that plagues us, to shine the light of His glory in our lives, to be our protection and refuge from the storms of life. Oh, how He loves us! If we could only grasp the truth of His abiding love for us...
This week, the faith of the centurion who approached Jesus leaps off the pages of Scripture (Mt 8:5-11). The centurion appealed to Jesus to heal his servant who was "paralyzed, suffering dreadfully." Jesus was willing to "come and cure him."
His complete trust and confidence in the authority of Jesus is astounding:
“Lord, I am not worthy to have you enter under my roof; only say the word and my servant will be healed.”
I want this man’s faith! I want to look at the problem facing me, then look to Jesus, asking, “Lord, say the word… I can’t fix what’s going on, but I know that You can. I have complete confidence in Your power and love.”
May this Advent be a time of preparing our hearts, of seeking opportunities to grow in holiness; of turning to Christ, our light, with childlike confidence in His power and love.
