I'm reminded of an incident I witnessed at Mass one morning. A man in a motorized wheelchair came in late. While he usually came alone, he had a friend with him that day. When the time came, he got up, and limped down the aisle to receive Jesus in the Holy Eucharist. I sat with bated breath as he limped back to his wheelchair. His shoes were untied, he was unsteady, a fall in the making... but, he made it back to his seat. Then he turned to his friend and whispered loudly, "Buddy, you're not going? I'll go get it for you."
He got up and made another trip, this time unsteady and short of breath. Father told him that he would come to his friend. I wondered if the friend was Catholic. With a sincerity I'll never forget, the old man told his friend to open his hands to receive, and to consume the Eucharist. He praised God aloud for the gift of Eucharist, then he turned to his friend and said, "We're going to be okay."
Friends, Jesus came to save us! He teaches us, feeds us, loves us... He promised to send us an Advocate and He did! He has given us His Holy Spirit to guide us, to grow us, to lead us to truth. We will grow in the knowledge and love of Christ if we allow the Holy Spirit to stir up in us the gifts of Wisdom, Understanding, Knowledge, Counsel, Fortitude, Piety and Fear of the Lord. We have all we need for our own spiritual growth, and for the service of others. "We are going to be okay."
Are you doing your part to build up the Body of Christ?
Are you using your voice, your life to tell others about the love of God?
Are you using your unique gifts to serve others?
Are you, like the old man, willing to do whatever it takes to bring Jesus to a friend or stranger?
Somewhere, someone needs you!
