I was thinking about the masks we wear. (No, not the COVID mask!)
You know, the face that tells everyone you’re okay: No problems here, I’m coping just fine, I have everything under control.
If they only knew! And maybe they do, because we are all caught up in the same mask-wearing game.
Can we remove that mask for a bit, and ask the hard questions?
Who told you that you had to handle everything on your own?
Who told you that you could have been more or done more with your life?
Who taught you to always look at what was lacking instead of the abundance that’s already there?
Who told you that you should wear yourself out trying to please others; that you should feel guilty about nurturing your own needs?
Who told you that you were responsible for the happiness of others or that you are dependent on others for your own contentment?
Who forced you to be constantly on the go, no time to rest and be still?
Who allowed you to miss the clouds racing across the sky, the moon in all its glory in the evening sky, the sunlight streaming through the clouds, the branches swaying to and fro in the wind…
Same old game, same old lies, keeping us from living in the moment, trusting that God has us exactly where He wants us. Past regrets, failed aspirations, all the should, would and could-haves keeping us from celebrating what is. Maybe, it's time to take off the mask and truly live...
