Several years ago, as I walked towards the altar to receive Jesus in Holy Communion, I noticed people with walkers or canes, people limping to the altar. God gave me an image of the "walking wounded": See, they are wounded, but they are not dead.
Most of us are wounded in some way. Some wounds are easy to see on the outside, while some lie hidden. God knows every wounded, tortuous heart and He loves the wounded! He sent His Son to save the wounded. There is still life in the wounded; they are still aware of their need for God.
In contrast to the wounded are the "walking dead". These are the ones who have lost all hope and trust in the mercy of God. These are slowly hemorrhaging; their lifeblood slowly draining as they separate themselves from their source of love and life. Please tell me that these stony hearts can still be exchanged for a heart of flesh; that it's not too late!
In this 5th week of Lent, may the wounded keep walking towards our source of healing, mercy and love... and for those too broken to limp, may we have the strength to call on Jesus; to tell Him to take away the stone, to call us out of the tomb or situation that is thwarting our efforts to come out to meet Him. (Jn 11:39, 43)
And, may we be more compassionate, more inclined to offer a fellow "walking wounded" a helping hand.
Jesus, help us to trust in you!
